Are you and your tenants meeting the new laws and policy standards to keep
the building safe?
As a landlord you should check that your tenants are up to
date with the current Building & Engineering
Services Association standard TR19. Failure to comply can seriously
affect your insurance policy, should there be an incident you will be liable as
it is the law.
Cleanliness is no longer the main ingredient for a
well-managed, safe, commercial kitchen. It is now essential to ensure against the
risk of fire from equipment. This is best managed using a professional company
who don't just clean your ventilation, hoods and ducting (the easy bit) but
will also give you a full assessment report documenting all the relevant
information as well as a certificate after
each visit to you keep on the right side of current legislation and industry
recommendations.
If regular cleaning is
not undertaken, fats, oily deposits and fibrous particles can accumulate in
kitchen extract and ventilation systems. This will reduce air flow efficiency
and produce a warm greasy environment.
If not professionally and regularly maintained your
equipment can quickly become a fire risk which is the major cause of fire in
commercial food production areas. Under certain circumstances flame or very
high temperatures can ignite the grease causing fire to spread rapidly
throughout the ducting. Therefore, it is of particular importance that grease
extract systems are regularly inspected and cleaned as required, to ensure they
do not pose a potential fire risk.
Are you covered?
We are increasingly seeing evidence that failure to have a
professional accredited kitchen extraction and canopy cleaning company to
undertake your grease removal is invalidating insurance policies, after the
devastating effects on businesses. In many cases insurers have refused to pay out on millions of pounds worth of claims
following fires where the insured has not complied with their contractual
obligations or warranties on their buildings insurance policies regarding
regular cleaning of the grease extract systems.
All ducts, especially kitchen ducts, require regular
cleaning in order to remain in good condition and in working order. Routine
ventilation duct cleaning is essential in order to maintain a healthy indoor
air quality.
Due diligence is best - check that you and
your tenants have professional coverage and certified regular visits to comply
with the new regulations to ensure all the buildings occupants are not at risk
of fire.
As one of the UK's preferred air duct cleaning companies,
APT provides a complete air duct cleaning services, including maintenance
cleaning, in addition to annual deep cleanings. We offer flexible scheduling
too, as we understand that you need to tend to your customers without
interruption or interference from our kitchen ventilation duct cleaning team.
Commercial Food Factory Cleaning
Client: Trigon Snacks Ltd,
Liverpool
Project: APT was asked to look at
solutions to carry out industrial deep cleaning within a food manufacturing
plant to deal with heavy build-up of hardened oil and grime that had built up
over time on high-level surfaces throughout one of the key production areas. These
areas were difficult to access or not accessible to their internal cleaning
operators. The food company had been unable to find any local companies who
could offer safe commercial cleaning solutions to carry out the high-level deep
cleaning that would meet with their strict health and safety programmes.
The Challenge
A recent internal audit identified the potential risk of
contamination to some of the processing areas. The auditors listed a programme
of improvement areas and contacted several commercial and industrial cleaning
companies to look at the deep, high-level cleaning. Some of these companies did
not respond or declined to quote for the works due to the nature of the work
and access difficulties.
APT’s Solution
APT surveyed the production areas and recommended cost
effective cleaning options to the client for commercial deep cleaning equipment
and the high-level heavily soiled surfaces of production machinery.
After agreeing a health and safety plan and suitable work
schedule to minimise disruption to production we used our own commercial
cleaning equipment, hiring in some specialist lift access platforms.
After agreeing a health and safety plan and suitable work
schedule to minimise disruption to production we used our own commercial
cleaning equipment, hiring in some specialist lift access platforms.
We used APT Powermax 2020 which is a food safe, heavy duty
degreaser product
(http://www.aptcommercialchemicals.co.uk/powermax-2020-industrial-degreaser) to
clean and degrease all high-level surfaces, under roof ceiling panels, all
steel work, extractor, pipe work, cabling and ducting. We set about cleaning the
hot oil frying equipment after discussing with the company’s operatives to understand
the existing plant cleaning methods. We used our own, more effective degreaser and
carb cleaner (http://www.aptcommercialchemicals.co.uk/metasoak-aluminium-cleaner-2)
to remove the heavy build-up of black carbon deposits and burned hard oils.
The client requested that we work in conjunction with their
new internal hygiene team to support the cleaning which we welcomed. Whilst on
site we trained them on how to use the Powermax 2020 degreaser and sanitise all
the plant machinery and equipment as part of their regular maintenance cleaning
programme. We later supplied them with the tools and equipment to carry out
effective cleaning.
Result
Whilst on site we assisted and carried out an assessment of
current cleaning methods and products used and we were then able to offer the
client several improvement options to raise the standard of hygiene and reduce
labour intensive cleaning.
One of the proposals was made after liaising with the
client’s plant engineers and assisting the client’s operatives to deep clean
the heavy oil frying equipment. Their current methods included the use of heavy
caustic chemicals and operatives were unable to achieve satisfactory cleaning
of the frying and extraction equipment. We introduced APT’s Metasoak, an
aluminium safe cleaner, to degrease and decarbonise both the steel and
aluminium metal surfaces. The proposal for the ongoing use of Metasoak heavy
duty degreaser was approved and implemented by the Technical Officer at Trigon.
We offered further improvements in cleaning methods and adaptations
to some of the equipment to allow some of the panel to be made demountable so
they could be cleaned automatically.
Another proposal was to allow for manual, low pressure,
heavy steam cleaning of intricate surface areas. This method would further
reduce safety risk to operatives and allow a more effective and quicker deep
clean which would result in large annual labour and chemical cost savings.
The list of improvements, application and equipment
adaptions were all passed to the technical and hygiene officer for approval and
implementation. Several other smaller key proposals were made and are part of
an ongoing improvements programme.
What Our Client Said
“I was very impressed at the level of knowledge and
understanding of our production processes and their interest and proposals
offered to improve cleaning standards throughout the production areas. This I
found was very unique, they did not just turn up and carry out the cleaning and
leave we. We found this information invaluable for improving our internal
cleaning programme.
The APT team approached the difficult cleaning tasks with
great professionalism and they kept my operational staff and I updated throughout
the project. Their operatives had no issue in working and assisting my hygiene
team and offered them help and training to use both chemicals and materials. They
were extremely helpful and assisted with several improvement measures which we
will now be implementing going forward. The plant managers and I are very
confident that APT will be of immense help to us in all future projects and we will
be recommending them to carry out regular and ongoing deep cleaning of our
plant.
Thank you again APT”
